Top 10 reasons Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize

While President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize win was unexpected and arguably premature, there are arguments in favour of him receiving it (compiled with the help of my husband, samhaydenjr):

1.He’s already announced that he would give his $1.4 million prize money to charity

2. He didn’t beat up Joe Wilson

3.He brought Binyamin Netanahyu and  Mahmoud Abbas together

4. His big solution to conflict…BEER!

5.His address to the Muslim world in Cairo undercut extremists on both sides

6. Has committed America to end torture without equivocation and restore Habeas Corpus

7.It’s not the first time the prize has been awarded with the intention of being a catalyst to the resolution of ongoing conflict (rather than waiting until after) – John Hume and David Trimble received it before the end of the Northern Ireland peace process.

8. Has re-engaged in dialogue with the rest of the world and symbolizes a new kind of interdependence and co-operation with the rest of the world

9. He isn’t George W. Bush!!! And Cheney’s gone too!!! Along with the rest of their cohorts at the Project for the New American Century!!

10. His election as President was celebrated the world over…surely a glimpse of his ability to inspire unity around the globe

On the other hand, perhaps you agree with this guy..

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. – Dalai Lama

March 10th, 2009 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising of 1959.
